Fly Fishing the Nubian Flats in Sudan

The Nubian Flats is not merely another fishing trip and offers the adventurous angler the opportunity to experience a setting and culture like no other. Spanning some 400 miles of unexplored coastline, the Nubian flats of Sudan represent an untouched saltwater playground. It is the worlds finest trigger fishery offering numerous shots on a daily basis. Although not the focus there are also excellent numbers of trevally to tangle with along the coral edges.

Experience the red sea

The backdrop of the stark Nubian Desert combined with the extremely friendly Sudanese and the electric blue of the Red Sea is something that every angler should experience. There are still massive areas of unexplored flats, making this destination even more enticing. We have earmarked two areas of operation, both extremely unique and offering every guest a great combination of productive flats and blue water fishing.

Because of the vastness of the area, we are in a fortunate position to be able to spread the fishing pressure, extremely sparsely, between these areas ensuring that the fishing remains as pristine as when we first arrived. These trips will be focused on the vast flats on the mainland as well as some small islands off the coast of Sudan. On the flats one can expect to encounter vast numbers of triggerfish and bluefin. There are also consistent opportunities at big GTs, barracuda, bohar, mangrove snapper and milkfish on the flats. Although tricky, there are chances every week at bonefish and permit. The blue water and flat edges have the potential for producing exceptional catches of GTs, dogtooth tuna, bluefin, barracuda, bohar and grouper species. This fishing can be extremely exciting and high paced.

Onboard the Scuba Libre

Accommodation consists of simple cabins, with triple configuration and seperate bathroom on the 60 ft motor catamaran. Meals are enjoyed in communal saloon area, which includes two dining tables and a coffee area. Tender boats consist of two large panga boats, which are used to access the flats and blue water fishing from March to late June.

“If you love trigers, this is trigger fish heaven.. throw in some big bluefin trevally, the odd monster GT and some mean boha snapper and it is kind of like the Seychelles with fare fewer bonefish.” J.F.

One of the most stunning locations in the world

The gateway for this trip is Port Sudan, which is an isolated town in the Nubian Desert. This is a very sparsely populated area and far removed from the security issues in South Sudan.

From our personal experience, as well as all of the guests that have joined us, during the many weeks we have spent in this wonderful and diverse country the atmosphere is extremely relaxed and a pleasure to travel through. The land crew and boat crew we work with are professional and efficient.
