Pesca Maya

Some of the best value flats fishing in the world with good chances of a grand slam.

Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge opened its doors on January 1996 and has quickly become one of the Yucatan's most popular fishing destinations. The lodge is located 90 miles south of Cancun in the 1.3 million acre Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. Situated on a long, narrow strip of barrier beach, the lodge is virtually surrounded by water. To the east lies the blue Caribbean and a few hundred yards off shore, the Palancar Barrier Reef which stretches from southern Belize to north of Cancun. On the western side lies the vast "El Rio" system of flats, channels and mangrove. 10 miles to the north is the famed inlet through the barrier beach known locally as the "Boca". Four miles to the south lies the world renown Ascension Bay. The entire is a haven for bonefish, permit, snook, tarpon and others, as well as reef and offshore fishing (in season).

In Ascension Bay there are hundreds of square miles of crystal clear flats where it’s common to see bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and jacks or barracuda in the same day year round! Sight fish for bonefish in skinny water, wading over a white sand bottom, look for permit in shallow flats just two or three feet deep or fish from the boat in a mangrove lagoon where tarpon are rolling. It is possible to go south and be in Ascension Bay in 15 minutes, or if the wind blows too hard go north to Boca Paila and find flats surrounded by mangroves. Both places are well known for its bonefish, permit, tarpon snook and barracuda in abundance. Wind protection is one of the great advantages of this area.

Pesca Maya can look after up to 22 anglers in their three lodges. They have their own tackle shop on site, and their fleet consists of 12 boats with excellent guides, and a beautiful beach where you can relax while not fishing. There are 11 rooms in the three buildings, all with air conditioning, private bathroom with walk-in showers, and most with an ocean view. The main lodge overlooks a solitary white sand beach, turquoise water and a magnificent coral reef at 90 yards from the beach. The spacious Seaclusion house is the centre of activities, and here you will have exquisite meals and cold drinks served. It is also where flies are tied and fishing stories swapped after a long day on the flats. Pesca Maya also offers some of the best value for money fishing in the saltwater arena.

Travel Tips:
Mexico is 6 hours behind GMT and flying time from London is approximately 10 hours plus transfer time. Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have direct schedules from London Gatwick. British Airways fly on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Mondays whilst Virgin Atlantic fly Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Visa's are not required for British passport holders.
