With the weather forecast finally looking like it might break from this prolonged spell of very hot and dry weather we are expecting to see hatches and fish spring into action on the English chalkstreams. Those who have been fishing of late have been rewarded for arriving early or fishing late into the evening.
On the chalkstreams, Insects of interest have been beetles and aphids falling from low hanging tree branches during the day time and small sedges and various small olive spinner returning to the water in the evening. With the hot dry weather and the increased activity on the nearby crop fields we are also expecting daddy long legs to play a part going forward.
River levels on the whole are still looking very good but a reasonable dousing of rain would not go amiss just to freshen everything up and stir up more fly life.
We are fast approaching the July weed cut but there are still a handful of great openings before then. For those looking for a less expensive day on the chalkstreams it is possible to buy weed cut days, whilst there can be disruption at this time, usually during the July and August cuts anglers can find some very good fishing too.
