Bluefin Tuna Guiding, France

There are few species that will test you and your tackle as much as Bluefin tuna and to catch one on the fly while busting baitfish on the surface has to be one of the most exciting prospects for any fly fishermen. There is an area off the west coast of France in the Bay of Biscay where a group of experienced guides has figured out where to target these busting schools a fly rod. Chasing them across the bluewater is exhilarating and their skill will allow you to have a shot at hooking them on the surface.

Aside from perhaps marlin you wont find a great challenge on the fly than hooking and landing a bluefin tuna. Their speed and power has to be seen to be believed. They do not have the disadvantage of a lactic acid build up so they do not tire creating an extraordinary fight for fly fishermen.

The guides are equipped with a Everglades 243cc inshore craft with 275 hp power Mercury Verado engine which will allow you to access the fishing areas quickly and comfortably. It has a wide deck area on the front making a perfect but stable casting platform. Once a school has been located you will chase it and the guides will put you in front of the school to get a shot with the fly. As the school comes charging towards you you need to keep your cool to make the shot and then strip the bait patterns rapidly to spark a take. Once you have hooked a fish you need to clear the line rapidly as nothing will prepare you for the power and speed that they take off with. Battles are brutal testing fishermen and tackle to the limit.
