Shangaa Camp

Stillwater tigerfishing

Shangaa Camp is a seasonal, expedition-style setup located on a secluded peninsula overlooking the vast expanse of the Nyerere Dam, in the heart of Nyerere National Park. The newly formed dam spans over 1200km2 and is fed by the Kilombero and Great Ruaha Rivers. The fishery here offers a relaxed, stillwater approach to tiger fishing in a setting surrounded by a protected wilderness.

tigerfishing alongside an immersive wilderness experience

Shangaa Camp is not a replacement for Dhala and Samaki Camps on the Mynera and Rhudji Rivers which remain the benchmark for technical tiger fishing in Africa. Shangaa complements that experience rather than competes with it. The camp is designed for small groups, offering a comfortable yet immersive wilderness experience.

Fishing on the dam is primarily done by drifting along the reservoir’s edges, targeting structure such as flooded forests, submerged channels, timber lines, rocky points, and newly formed bays. These areas create ideal ambush zones for tigerfish. When productive water is found, boats can hold position using electric motors or anchors to work areas more thoroughly.

The fishery is still very much in its early stages, with minimal historical pressure and an abundance of baitfish. It is already producing quality tigerfish into the mid-teens, with the system showing strong potential for significantly larger fish as it matures.

Fishing is conducted from purpose-built 18ft panga boats, each accommodating two anglers and a professional guide. To protect this young fishery, all tigerfish are strictly catch-and-release, and only single, barbless hooks are permitted. Sensitive zones, including nursery areas, are strictly avoided. Shangaa also works particularly well as an add-on to a Dhala or Samaki Camp trip. Logistically, it pairs best after a river stay. It’s a great spot for those short on time, anglers new to fly fishing and families or groups looking for a more relaxed pace. This is a hosted experience with a guide rotating through the group to keep things running smoothly and productive.

Rustic, seasonal bush camp

Accommodation is in spacious canvas bell tents (single or double), each with a private outdoor shower and flush toilet. A central dining and lounge area, set under canvas, forms the heart of the camp, with meals often prepared over an open fire.
