Makunudu, Maldives

Original Maldivian Retreat

Little changed for 20 years, Makunudu is a wonderfully low-key resort and offers a nod to old-style Maldives hospitality. Just 50 minutes from Malé by speed boat, this is a very different Maldives to the glitzy glamour of the majority of resorts here. While you won’t find swimming pools, overwater villas and plunge pools you will enjoy warm hospitality in a pristine Robinson Crusoe-like setting. The number of repeat visitors speaks volumes for this little gem.

Plenty to explore and enjoy

The unbroken house reef surrounds the island and the white sand beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling – you can snorkel around the whole island in around 45 minutes. There’s good scuba diving (beginners can learn) and a range of other water based activities including windsurfing and kayaking to enjoy. Sunset cruises, line fishing, sandbank trips and guided snorkelling can all be arranged.

Intimate island hideaway

The 37 thatched villas are spread around the island, each with air-conditioning, an en-suite open air bathroom, and plenty of outdoor seating. The lovely, sandy floor, open-sided bar has 360 degree views over the ocean and is a great spot to relax with a drink or a book. The bar extends over the sea with a spacious deck providing further seating. The restaurant has the same gentle atmosphere and serves a set menu with a BBQ and Maldivian evening two nights a week. Special dinners can be arranged at Malaafaiy, a pretty platform overlooking the ocean. There’s a sunset bar, a pretty little spa, and the whole island is walkable in about 15 minutes.

Simple and unspoilt in a quiet setting

At just six acres, Makanudu is one of the smallest resorts in the Maldives. It sits in a quiet part of the North Malé Atoll and is an easy 50 minute speed boat ride from the international airport at Malé
