Poronui Ranch, North Island, New Zealand

Exclusive access to trophy trout

Poronui Ranch is a luxury fly fishing lodge nestled in the Taharua valley south-east of Taupo on New Zealand’s spectacular North Island, offering guests exclusive access to trophy trout in privately owned and managed waters. The 16,000 acre property offers some of New Zealand’s best fishing and has been a favoured fishing and hunting ground for ancient Maori tribes, and since 1877, the English settlers.

World Class trout Fishing

Today the trout fishing at Poronui Ranch is recognized as world class. Fly fisherman come to Poronui from all corners of the globe to test their skills against New Zealand’s brown and rainbow trout.

The landscape at Poronui is as varied as the sky is big. Crystal clear mountain water tumbles through forests of beech and native ferns, then twists its way through alpine meadows of wild grasses on the valley floor.

What makes dry fly trout fishing at Poronui Ranch so special is the exclusive and immediate access to so many of New Zealand’s best quality fishing waters and guides. The property has almost 25 miles of private water.

The Taharua – a spring creek – meanders down the valley, while the Mohaka River – a tumbling freestone stream – wraps itself around one boundary. The ranch also hosts a helicopter charter service, flying fishermen quickly to otherwise inaccessible areas. The legendary Ngaruroro and Rangitikei rivers, and many more remote and smaller streams, are only a short and spectacular helicopter flight away. Whether your choose to wade in shallow, gentle streams, or tackle the physical demands of an alpine freestone stream, there is water on the ranch to suit you. Poronui Ranch has a team of permanent full-time guides who are considered consummate professionals in their field.

Fabulous food and wine

The main lodge and seven individual guest cabins have evolved from a once rustic fishing camp into one of the world’s finest fishing lodges.  Each  guest cabin has en-suite facilities and a private deck.  The main lodge exudes a warm, welcoming atmosphere and is a great spot to share experiences with fellow guests.

The Poronui Lodge kitchen is renowned for its outstanding food and wine selection. Venison, pork, lamb and wild duck come from the property and surrounding region, and the proximity to the ocean offers an abundance of fresh fish, salmon, lobster and mussels. The wine cellar stocks more than 10,000 bottles of most internationally recognised vintages as well as the cream of New Zealand’s wines.

Fishing isn’t everything at Poronui Ranch. The operation is a wonderful outdoor playground offering a range of excellent facilities for hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, shooting and rafting. There are more than 100 miles of private roads and tracks winding through through the hills and along the streams. Close to the main lodge, a modern sports and relaxation centre has gym and health club facilities.

“Best fishing I have ever experienced. My son and I visited Poronui and could not have been more impressed. The lodge is wonderful, the staff could not be any more attentive and we had great fishing.”  Mr. S. Elliott – UK
