Croatia Fly Fishing
Fly Fishing in Croatia may not be as widely talked about as that in its Balkan neighbours; Slovenia and Bosnia, but it offers some phenomenal fishing experiences. The country boasts
Fly fishing in Croatia is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, with crystal-clear, insect-rich rivers that rival the more famous fisheries of neighbouring Slovenia and Bosnia. From the chalkstream-like waters of the Gacka River to the freestone character of the Kupa and Kupica rivers, Croatia provides outstanding dry fly fishing in beautiful, unspoilt surroundings.
Croatia’s rivers each offer a distinct style of fly fishing. The Gacka is renowned for its steady flow, abundant weed growth, prolific hatches, and exceptionally fast-growing brown trout, creating one of Europe’s finest dry fly fisheries. Fishing is almost exclusively from the bank, with sight fishing to rising trout a highlight throughout the season. In contrast, the Kupa and its tributary, the Kupica, offer classic limestone freestone fishing through forested valleys, where wading amongst runs, riffles, and pools rewards anglers targeting wild grayling and brown trout. The Kupica is particularly famous for its spectacular dry fly fishing and thriving grayling population, while the Kupa also provides seasonal opportunities for the powerful huchen (Danube salmon) during the winter months. Together, these rivers offer remarkable variety within a relatively compact area.
Croatia’s limestone rivers support a fascinating mix of native freshwater species:
