Why Fly Fishing in Venezuela

Fly fishing on the Los Roques archipelago is one of the most distinctive saltwater flats experiences in the Caribbean. This remote marine national park comprises over 300 islands and cays, surrounding an enormous lagoon system defined by shallow sandbanks, coral patches, and the famous “pancake flats.” These expansive, crystal-clear flats create ideal conditions for sight fishing in exceptionally shallow water, where tailing bonefish can often be spotted pushing through just inches of water.

Freshwater enthusiasts will also find fishing to enjoy in Venezuela with some superb payara fishing on the Paragua River in the eastern highlands  state of Bolivar.

What Makes Fly Fishing in Venezuela so special

What sets Los Roques apart is the scale and accessibility of its shallow-water fishery, with vast lagoon systems and interconnected flats stretching between the islands and cays. Much of the fishing is skiff-based, enabling access to remote areas of the archipelago, but many flats also lend themselves to productive wading, offering highly technical sight fishing where precision casting and careful approach are essential. Many anglers return year after year to test their skills in this uniquely captivating destination.

On the freshwater front, the payara in the Paragua River often exceed 30lb and strike with enormous power. Sometimes referred to as ‘salmon with bad attitude’ these fish provide an exhilarating test for visiting anglers.
