Grand Slam Fishing Lodge, Mexico

The best fishing on the Mayan Riviera

Ascension Bay is one of the most pristine fisheries in the Caribbean. It’s part of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, named an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. This 1.3 million-acre estuary is teeming with fish, birds and other wildlife. The fish naturally populate without human intrusion.

Diverse fishery with good chance of a Grand Slam

The bay features miles and miles of shallow flats, a perfect breeding ground for crabs, the cherished delicacy of permit, and the reason permit grow to world-record sizes here. The bonefish are plentiful, so your opportunities for landing these fierce fighters are numerous. Ascension Bay is world-renowned for its seemingly endless saltwater flats and fishermen come here primarily seeking the challenge of the elusive permit and bonefish, plus the chance to achieve a Grand Slam.

Just a two hour drive south of Tulum this pristine fishery hosts some of the biggest permit in the world as well as enormous schools of bonefish. With tarpon and snook on hand it forms one of the best places to go for a Grand Slam or Super Slam. You get great value out of a day of fishing here with so many opportunities to present flies and lures. It’s a diverse fishery for experts and beginners alike. There are crystal clear flats with one to two feet of water that smaller bonefish call home, plus three to four foot deep flats where bigger bonefish and permit roam.

There are also protected areas if the wind picks up, and a 70-mile reef for migrating game fish. The lodge provides a private guide for each angler. Both fly fisherman and spinning enthusiasts will find the expansive flats of Ascension Bay a thrill. You can try reef and offshore sports fishing too. A perfect retreat for anglers and non-anglers alike.

Relax in beachfront villas

Situated right on the beachfront, the lodge is a great place to sit back and relax. There are 12 beachfront villa rooms, complete with air conditioning, king-size beds, satellite television, wrap-around deck and locking rod racks. Cool off in the pool or have drinks delivered to you at your Bali beach bed.

The lodge is on a narrow, palm tree-studded strip facing the Caribbean on one side with the lagoon lapping on the other side. As such, you get great sea views plus easy access to Ascension Bay from the lagoon dock. You can swim in the warm sandy waters by the lodge or snorkel over the nearby coral areas. You can opt for the swimming pool; the pool butlers will deliver drinks to your lounge chair there too.

The main lodge has a tropical thatched-roof design with natural flair. It features a social area, a bar with swings for seats, and Kai Restaurant with a covered beachfront deck. There’s a library, computer and fly tying station.
