Cayo Paredon, Cuba

Fly fishing at Cayo Paredon

Cayo Paredon in Cuba is a superb saltwater fly fishery for tarpon, bonefish and permit.  Located in the eastern province of Camaguey, Cayo Paredon is a tiny island of 8.7km sq in the middle of the Gardens of the King (Jardines del Rey) archipelago.  The fishing area represents one of Cuba’s cleanest and most biologically diverse ecosystems.

Great wading in a pristine environment

The hard bottomed flats bordering deep blue channels allow for great wade fishing opportunities primarily for bonefish and permit.  The extensive flats of Cayo Paredon are well known for having some of the biggest bonefish in Cuba with fish in excess of 10lbs not uncommon, and good numbers of fish too.

Many anglers choose these north coast flats to hunt permit, the ease of wading and prolific feeding grounds make it a great place to focus on one of the flats’ most selective of fish. It is also possible to search the deeper flats from the skiffs when the permit are moving between wading flats.

It is also possible to target baby tarpon throughout the year, with a healthy resident population of fish from 5-25lbs with a few bigger fish in amongst them. There is the added bonus of the tarpon migration running through the area so big fish can be expected during the peak months of the year, usually between March and August.

The Cayo Paredon flats fishing also offers more variety in the shape of barracuda, jacks, grouper, snapper and triggerfish, for those who like to target a multitude of species.

Modern hotel accommodation

Whilst fishing the flats of Cayo Paredon, anglers stay in the newly built Hotel Cayo Paredon Grande.  This all inclusive resort sits on a beautiful beach and provides all the amenities of a modern resort hotel. With comfortable air conditioned rooms, several bars and restaurants, and swimming pools to unwind after a day on the flats.

Easy access to an unspoilt fishery

There are two access points; Cayo Coco-Jardines del Rey which is a small international airport just 10km from Paredon or the international airport at Camaguey which is a three hour drive away.

It is also possible to fly into Havana for those who would like to explore the city for a couple of days. Transfers to/from the capital are not included in the package cost and would be quoted separately if required.
