Kau Tapen Lodge, Argentina

Sea trout fishing Kau Tapen Lodge, Rio Grande (TDF), Argentina

Kau Tapen was the first fishing lodge to open on the Rio Grande and has made this stunning river a household name for fly anglers the world over. It is the standard of excellence against which other lodges in this area are measured.

The Finest Sea Trout Fishing in the World…

The fishing at Kau Tapen has been described as the finest fly fishing for sea trout in the world. The lodge  has access to 16km of the Rio Grande where the sea-run brown trout average 12lb but can reach as much as 30lb plus.  Kau Tapen has access to fly fishing on both banks of the Rio Grande, and the river offers easy wading on fine gravel.

The fishing daily schedule contains approximately nine hours of fishing. After a morning on the river, lunch is taken at the lodge and is followed during the early season by a siesta. The afternoon fishing session starts later during the months of December and January to capitalise on the magical dusk fishing hours. Kau Tapen is a strictly catch and release fishery. The combination of international and Argentine guides are all able to give casting tuition with single and double handed fly rods (Spey casting).

Exemplary service and standards

Kau Tapen Lodge has spectacular views overlooking grasslands that roll across expansive terrain, broken up only by the jagged spires of the Andes that separate Argentina from Chile miles upriver.

Kau Tapen has a maximum capacity for ten rods (occasionally 12) per week, accommodated in en-suite bedrooms with maid and laundry service. It offers amenities such as massage, sauna and a steam room, and a drying room for wet gear. Kau Tapen’s acclaimed chef and house staff are experienced and hospitable. Fine Argentine wines are chosen to complement each meal, and menus will delight even the most discriminating palate. Clients will also find a fully equipped tackle shop with flies, rods, reels, lines, and clothing.

“I have been going to Kau Tapen for 12 years and will continue to return as long as my hips and knees allow me to. The accommodation and food are first class and the fishing is excellent. Still time to improve on my PB of 22lb.” R B-C, London

Revolutionising Fly Fishing

Kau Tapen is the original fly fishing lodge in Tierra del Fuego and what started as the brainchild of Jorge Donovan and Jacqueline De Las Carreras over 20 years ago has revolutionised the way in which the fishing world views fly fishing for large sea trout. Guests fly into Buenos Aires and typically overnight there, spending a day or two exploring this great city.  Commercial airlines fly from Buenos Aires to the airport of Río Grande in Tierra del Fuego, from which it is a 30 minute transfer to the lodge.
