Africa is a huge continent to explore with multiple climates, time zones and incredible animals and open spaces. With this comes an immense range of fishing opportunities for the travelling angler. Internally the continent is littered with small dry fly streams, large structure laden rivers with big predatory fish. The coastline is vast, stretching from the Mediterranean in the north, through the Atlantic to the west, back up through the Indian Ocean to the east and finishing in the Red Sea. The waters are home to more fish species than you can count. Below we have a summary of destinations that you can travel to at short notice in 2025.

Gassa Camp, Cameroon

Gassa Camp is situated on the Faro River in Cameroon, and has, over the past few years, evolved into an iconic African fly fishery. Home to massive Nile perch, three species of tigerfish, Niger barb, large-scaled tetra, and a variety of other species, it offers an incredibly diverse fly fishing experience in Africa.
What makes this destination even more remarkable is that it all unfolds in one of West Africa’s last true wilderness areas, home to iconic big game such as lion, forest buffalo, Lord Derby eland, elephant, and leopard, as well as endemic West African bird and mammal species. This combination makes Gassa Camp a bucket list destination for both naturalists and anglers alike.

Guests are based at Gassa Camp, a seasonal tented camp on the banks of the Faro River, which overlooks Faro National Park and operates each year from January to April. The camp allows a limited number of anglers access to this incredible area, with a maximum of four anglers at a time, expertly guided by three professional guides. Each season, the camp accommodates up to 20 rods in total.

Makhangoa Community Camp, Lesotho

The Makhangoa Community Camp and Bokong fishery has, over the past several seasons, become a bucket list destination for local and international fly fishermen alike. Not only due to the world class sight fishing and guiding, but also largely due the incredible success of the Makhangoa Community benefaction programs and conservation projects the camp supports.
With over 80% of MCC guests being return guests, visitors to the MCC leave with a tangible connection to the fishery, the environment, and the community. The lodge offers a maximum of 6 rods (8 if all one group) exclusive access to the Bokong River through the Makhangoa Community Camp and associated Fishery Management Plan. All fly fishing is strictly catch and release on a beat rotation system.

Limited to a max of 8 rods per day and 50km of private water through the Makhangoa Community Fishery Management Plan, the Bokong River remains one of Africa’s finest fisheries.
