Pyrenees Fly Fishing, Spain

Good food, stunning landscapes and endless fishing

A little known fly fishing destination sits on the sunny side of the Pyrenees, astonishingly beautiful and strategically located. Indulge your passion in an environment of warm sunshine, interesting culture, delicious food and stunning landscapes. Ernest Hemingway visited Spain in 1920 and found himself fascinated by the rivers, mountains and the warmth of the local people, calling it “The closest thing to heaven”.

Private and varied water

These spectacular fishing venues are all situated within the Ordesa National Park, certified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most notable species you target is the wild zebra trout, endemic to the Mediterranean region, it is a beautiful and well preserved treasure. Guests will also have the opportunity to fish brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout and barbel. Fishing is mostly done with dry flies but nymph and streamer fishing can be great in the spring and autumn.

From the stunning Tierra de Biescas hotel, anglers of all abilities have access to some of the best spots for fly fishing in the Pyrenees. All-terrain vehicles offer access to some of the hardest to reach parts of the Pyrenees providing anglers with a wonderfully exclusive experience. Rivers and lakes are never more than an hour and a half away and each journey will take you across the hugely varied landscape of the Spanish Pyrenees.

Among the many different options for fly fishing are high mountain lakes with spectacular views, hidden gorges teeming with zebra trout and brown trout, and stunning mid-size mountain streams where you will find the biggest trout and the Iberian barbel. In the early season, April and May, fishing is focused on the low valley rivers and nymph fishing due to snow melt, but even at this time anglers can enjoy some dry fly fishing. From June through to October the fishing is focused on the small mountain rivers and crystalline lakes, and this is a great time to fish dry flies and terrestrial patterns for small to mid-sized trout and Iberian barbel. In the late season, October to December, fishing is focused in the foothills with nymphs and streamers. The reward for braving the colder weather is that this is is often the time when the largest trout are caught each season.
