Fly fishing with the family—or with non-fishing companions—isn’t nearly as daft an idea as it might sound. While anglers often claim they need solitude to truly enjoy their sport, there are plenty of destinations where fishers and non-fishers alike can enjoy a memorable holiday together.
Better still, bonefish (perfect as an introduction to saltwater fly fishing) are found throughout the Indian Ocean and Caribbean, with a number of excellent lodges that cater to everyone, whether they fish or not.
The only real danger? Introducing your non-fishing companions to the joys of angling. In our household, it has became an expensive passion shared by all.
Belize
Small islands scattered along the coast, stunning white-sand beaches, and the world’s second-largest barrier reef make Belize a superb all-round destination.
Turneffe Flats Lodge is an excellent choice, particularly if combining fishing with diving.

El Pescador is another favourite, with plenty of activities for those not heading out on the water.
For pure relaxation, Thatch Caye Resort is ideal, while anglers can arrange fishing packages through nearby Blue Horizon Lodge.
Tucked into the lush jungles of southern Belize, Copal Tree Lodge overlooks the Rio Grande and offers both freshwater and saltwater fishing in one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems.
Seychelles
With its barefoot luxury and Robinson Crusoe charm, Seychelles is hard to beat for a beach holiday with world-class fishing on the side.
Alphonse Island is the standout option for the ultimate fishing and non-fishing combination. Once a dedicated anglers’ lodge, it has evolved into a slick five-star retreat while keeping its laid-back island character. Guests still cycle around the island, weaving past resident giant tortoises, making it a wonderfully unique place to unwind.

Bahamas
The Bahamas offers some of the finest bonefishing waters in the world, alongside some lovely lodges.
Kamalame Cay is a luxurious barefoot retreat with easy access to the famed flats of Andros Island. While anglers fish with expert guides, non-fishers can enjoy charming cottages, tropical gardens, a pool, spa, kayaking, tennis, and an excellent dive centre.

Delphi Club on Abaco is another super option, combining stylish accommodation with pristine beaches, forest walks, wildlife, and first-class fly fishing.
Then there is Tiamo on South Andros. Designed as a boutique luxury spa retreat, it offers direct access to some of the Bahamas’ best bonefishing. With just a handful of villas and rooms in a private cove, it is a romantic escape perfect for couples. Guides can even collect anglers directly from the beach, maximising time on the flats.
Mexico
Mexico was one of the first destinations opened up for saltwater fly fishing in the late 1960s and remains a superb choice today. With prolific fisheries along its coastline and the chance to target multiple grand slam species, it is ideal for those new to saltwater fishing or families combining a beach holiday with time on the bonefish flats.

Casa Clorinda is a charming guesthouse in Campeche, offering both fishing opportunities and access to fascinating cultural experiences.
Venezuela
Properly planned, Los Roques can work surprisingly well for non-fishers. You won’t find lavish spas or ultra-luxury, but you will be warmly looked after, with beautiful beaches perfect for relaxing with a book. The bonefishing, meanwhile, is spectacular.

Maldives
In the heart of the Maldives, COMO Maalifushi is the epitome of island sophistication. Flats fly fishing is available between December and April, while the resort’s many other activities mean non-fishing family members may hardly notice you slipping away for a day on the water.
