Grand Slam Lodge in Mexico’s Ascension Bay, a long standing favourite here at Aardvark McLeod, has entered a new phase in partnership with our friends at Blue Safari. This is Blue Safari’s first foray outside the Seychelles and we are excited to see their take on this already super spot which is home to some of the biggest permit in the world.

Known for their conservation emphasis, The Blue Safari team will approach their new property, renamed Sian Ka’An Lodge, with the same conviction that has shaped the famous Indian Ocean atolls of Alphonse, Cosmoledo, Farquhar and Astove. Sitting within the UNESCO-listed Sian Ka’An biosphere, the fishing is strictly catch and release, employment is drawn from local communities and there will be active partnerships with Punta Allen including beach clean-up and plastic removal initiatives. The lodge’s solar panels supply approximately 85% of its energy and a conservation levy included in each stay goes directly to the reserve.

On the angling front, the lodge sits inside one of the world’s great mixed-species flats fisheries. Ascension Bay holds the Big Four of Caribbean fly fishing – permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook – and Punta Allen, a kilometre from the lodge, is recognised internationally as the Atlantic permit capital of the world. For those who fish, the opportunity here is as good as it gets.

Blue Safari Mexico is not just a fishing lodge – it is a destination. The Yucatán peninsula is home to more than 6,000 cenotes, the freshwater sinkholes the ancient Maya revered as sacred portals. Above ground, Tulum stands as one of the last great Mayan coastal cities. El Castillo and the Temple of the Frescoes still draw wonder from the clifftops above the ocean.

Each evening, guests return to the lodge to share the day’s experiences. Meals are led by Mexican chefs, drawing on produce from the surrounding communities and line-caught fish from Punta Allen.
