While Europe and North America thaw into spring, New Zealand settles into autumn: cooler temperatures and fewer anglers. March is a moment of challenge, offering some of the most rewarding fishing of the year for anglers who live for pursuit.
Eleven Cedar Lodge and Eleven Owen River Lodge will provide plenty of interest for the visiting angler.
Here’s what to expect in late season at a couple of our favourite lodges:
Cedar Lodge
Technical waters, high rewards
Stable weather and clear, lower water make March ideal for sight-fishing. Seasoned anglers will find opportunities for technical fishing, late-season terrestrials, mayfly hatches, and wary trout demanding precise presentations.

Owen River Lodge
Big trout, bigger challenge
Dropping levels, crystalline waters, and diverse fisheries set the stage. As river levels fall, many beats become easier to access on foot, while longer leaders and stealthier presentations are rewarded with some of the year’s biggest trout.

Why go Fly Fishing in New Zealand?
The simple answer is because it is simply world-class.

- With countless rivers, streams, and lakes across both islands, New Zealand offers some of the finest fishing on earth for wild brown and rainbow trout. Offshore, superb saltwater action awaits for marlin, kingfish, and snapper.
- Crystal-clear rivers allow thrilling sight fishing, often as challenging as it is rewarding. Fishing with a guide opens access to some of the most productive and lightly pressured waters.
- While summer is peak season, excellent fishing can be found somewhere in New Zealand year-round.
- From luxury lodges and expert guides to more relaxed, low-key options, there’s a trip to suit every angler.
New Zealand offers countless options that suit both fishers and non-fishers alike (see Charlotte’s blog for more information on how that can work). For more information contact Alex Jardine or call our office on +44(0)1980 847389.
