Grand Slam Lodge in Mexico’s Ascension Bay, a long standing favourite here at Aardvark McLeod, has entered a new phase in partnership with our friends at Blue Safari. This is Blue Safari’s first foray outside the Seychelles and we are excited to see their take on this already super spot which is home to some of the biggest permit in the world. Re-named Sian Ka’An Lodge the fishing is as good as ever and we’ve just received this recent report detailing recent fishing successes.
The past couple of weeks have been nothing short of incredible, welcoming new and old faces, all of whom were treated with phenomenal weather and exceptional fishing. The tarpon ran a little later this year, which was welcomed by our guests and as always, the permit put on a good show, including a good few landing on surface flies. We even had a couple of snook make an appearance, and as always, the bonefish kept rods bent in between.
It is always a pleasure having the Stapp family join, the boys had a blast targeting everything that swims and had a good few opportunities at some big tarpon. Josh and Shannon, had permit on the mind and had an exceptional week of opportunities, many fish seen and behaving as permit do! A couple lost for reasons unknown, shoals of fish almost 200 strong to make them tremble, and it all came together on the final day with two exceptional permit for each of them. The perfect way to end a trip.
Doug and Matt got stuck into the tarpon and had some great opportunities at migratory fish as well as some of the resident fish of the bay, coming away with some epic specimens.
Daniel and his group of long time returning anglers had a great time with us. The weather treated them, and so did the fish. Daniel himself landed four permit in the week, included in that was a day where he also landed a tarpon and a bonefish, to complete a flats slam. Landing a fish on a floating fly has become a great challenge, is extremely rewarding and provides a great visual experience. Two of Daniel’s fish came on floating crabs, which will surely be remembered for some time. Nick and David were also privileged enough to land their first Atlantic permit, both of which were very noteworthy specimens. Austin equally took advantage of his stay and had a day that we think he will remember for some time. Landing his first permit and then went on to catch a tarpon and bonefish to complete a flats slam, a first for him as well, which is a phenomenal achievement.
Among these highlights, our other anglers got stuck into the many other species the bay has to offer, keeping rods bent and smiles on faces. It’s always great to hear stories shared around the bar and at the dinner table, and to see our guests making friends for life and becoming part of the Sian Ka’An Lodge community.
