After a slow start, the Icelandic salmon season has burst into life, with catch statistics rising quickly as strong runs of fresh salmon enter rivers across the country. Fish are arriving in exceptional condition, and the results are beginning to reflect it. Midfjardará is currently around 50% ahead of the same stage last season, Norðurá continues to produce excellent catches, while Stóra Laxá recently landed 20 salmon in three days, all over 80cm, with the largest weighing an estimated 22lb. A handful of late cancellations have created some excellent last-minute opportunities to experience some of Iceland’s finest salmon fishing while the rivers are hitting top form.
