The Pyrenees, Spain, June 2027 with Alistair Routledge

Join Alistair Routledge for an 8-day adventure exploring the best of the Spanish Pyrenees. During the trip, anglers will have the opportunity to fish both Catalan and Aragonese Pyrenean rivers, combining larger rivers with small mountain tributaries and experiencing a wide variety of fishing environments and techniques. The trip is primarily designed around active and enjoyable fishing. The main objective is to enjoy fishing in beautiful surroundings with relatively low fishing pressure. Although some rivers offer the possibility of encountering larger fish, the trip is mainly about enjoying the action and the variety of fishing situations.

Pyrenees Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing in THE PYRENEES

Why ALISTAIR wants to visit this destination

Alistair is incredibly excited to be exploring the Spanish Pyrenees next June, a part of Spain that he believes remains one of Europe’s great fly-fishing secrets. The combination of spectacular mountain scenery, crystal-clear rivers and wild trout is hugely appealing, particularly at this time of year when the high-mountain waters are opening up and the fishing moves into some of the most beautiful and remote valleys. From the Graus area in the eastern Pyrenees, with its wonderful variety of rivers and tributaries, to Biescas and the valleys around Ordesa in the west, there is an extraordinary diversity of water to explore, from intimate mountain streams and hidden gorges to larger rivers holding wild brown trout and the remarkable endemic zebra trout. The opportunity to explore different valleys each day, follow the conditions and seek out rising fish, often in places where there are very few other anglers, is a huge part of the attraction. Add in the incredible scenery, warm Spanish hospitality, fantastic food and wine, and the chance to experience a completely different side of Spain, and this is a trip Alistair is genuinely looking forward to sharing.

Accommodation is in shared ensuite rooms (single rooms available on request). Meals are served in the main restaurant, featuring excellent local cuisine, and a well-stocked bar. For dinners, in addition the the hotel’s restaurant, you will also have the opportunity to sample some of the excellent nearby restaurants in Graus, all included in the trip cost (alcoholic drinks excluded). Friday 4th – Sunday 6th June – The three days around Graus offer an exceptional variety of fishing, with a fascinating mix of mountain rivers and streams, each offering a distinctly different experience. The fishing ranges from larger waters where there is always the possibility of encountering a truly impressive brown trout, to smaller, crystal-clear alpine streams that are perfectly suited to dry-fly fishing. With healthy wild trout populations and a huge variety of water to explore, these first three days provide a wonderful introduction to the diversity and character of Pyrenean fly fishing.

Sunday 6th June – On Sunday the 6th, after fishing a morning and short afternoon session, you will transfer onwards to your next location, the elegant four-star Hotel Viñas de Lárrede. A beautiful mountain retreat overlooking the Tena Valley, built in stone and timber and surrounded by spectacular Pyrenean scenery, it combines traditional mountain character with comfortable, stylish accommodation, an excellent restaurant and a spa – the perfect place to relax after a day on the river. Once again, accommodation is in shared rooms (single rooms available on request) on a full board basis, with riverside lunches provided to maximise your time on the water.

Monday 7th – Wednesday 9th June – The next three days take you into the spectacular valleys around Biescas, where the fishing becomes increasingly wild and remote. Here, you’ll explore some of the most beautiful waters in the Pyrenees, with excellent populations of distinctive zebra-patterned brown trout and a wonderful mixture of intimate mountain streams and more substantial river sections. Special access permits allow you to reach areas that are unavailable to most anglers, giving you the opportunity to enjoy some genuinely uncrowded fishing surrounded by dramatic high-mountain scenery.
