New Zealand’s South Island has shifted into spring, marking the start of the fly fishing season at Owen River Lodge and Cedar Lodge. Final touches are being put in place, guides are out monitoring conditions, walking the rivers, scouting trout lies and observing feeding conditions. While the lodges are waiting to welcome their guests, the pre-season prep is in full swing.
Pre-season prep at Owen River Lodge
New cottage updates are complete. Winter bought several significant downpours which has set up solid conditions and opportunistic trout who will be eager to take a well presented fly.

Seasonal shifts underway at Cedar Lodge
Further south, the lodge team is keeping an eye on snowpack, rainfall, water levels, spawning patterns and landscape conditions. This winter began with a relatively light snowpack but late-season snow fall has bolstered this. the first lambs are back out in the paddocks, a sign that the trout are about to wake up from winter, ready to feed.

November and December – first come, first served
Spring is one of New Zealand’s most rewarding seasons. Trout emerge from their more dormant winter state with a healthy appetite. They’re actively looking to feed, more willing to follow a fly, and instinctually driven to respond to a good presentation. The rivers are lightly fished and long days allow for plenty of time on the water. The South Island’s changing scenery is beautiful and the guide teams are both lodges are itching to get back out on the water they know and love.
