We’ve worked with many of our partners for years and were pleased to receive this report from Sweetwater with whom we work in Mongolia. It’s great to hear that things are going well it this remarkable fishery.

2026 marked 30 years since this taimen caught on our 1996 exploratory. All these years later, we are happy to report, Mongolia and its taimen is still one of our favourite places in the world to fish. The fishery remains strong, the countryside will still take your breath away with its beauty, and the people will remind you why Mongolia is so remarkably special.

Mongolia, taimen fishing, Aardvark McLeod

Last year, our anglers experienced the true raw magic of the Mongolia. From dramatic autumn golden landscapes to glorious summer days on the river, the world’s largest trout entertained anglers with jaw dropping strikes and legendary ferocity. Taimen are a strike worth travelling for. Whether you are looking to skate giant dry flies over the world’s largest trout stealthy prowling the shallows for a grayling or lenok or swinging dry flies along some wonderful dry fly glides that are a joy to fish, Mongolia’s fishing has a little bit of every type of water.

In addition to the world’s largest trout, Mongolia is home to a prolific lenok (Asian trout) and grayling population. Mongolian rivers are home to really strong mayfly and caddis hatches that provide exceptional dry fly fishing most afternoons. However, beware, as Taimen are always looking for an easy meal and your lenok or grayling may be on the menu.

Mongolia is also home to one of our planet’s most authentic nomadic cultures. So, it is a great trip for both the fisherman and the non-fisherman. We are happy to help you set up a city tour in the capital, a few days in the Gobi, or what we consider to be one of the greatest hunting festivals the Eagle Hunting Festivals in western Mongolia. It is a great addition to a Mongolian fishing trip.

If you would like to catch the world’s largest trout species in a land that looks like Montana 150 years ago get in touch as space fills fast here. We can now offer three weeks of smaller float trips in late July and early August as well as the traditional taimen season that begins at the end of August and ends on October 11th. Full availability for all the fishing we offer in Mongolia can be found HERE.
