With the continuing wet and miserable UK winter it is nice to let our minds drift back to moments when the warm orange thing was in the sky. The shooting season is drawing to a close, the children are back at school, so why stop there? There is still time to get away this winter and some fantastic destination for both fishers and non-fishers alike.

Mexico

The Mayan Riviera has long since been a winter sun spot and as it is easily accessed from the UK by direct flights on Virgin or British Airways makes it perfect for break from the monotony of the UKs dreary January weather. Mexico was one of the very first areas to be opened up for saltwater fishing in the late 1960’s and as such has some long standing slick operations. As the fishery up and down the coast is prolific with possibilities to catch all the major grand slam species it is the perfect destination to cut your teeth in the salt or combine a family holiday with some bonefishing. Mexico is also famous for its permit fishing, so if this species is on your hit list or has already got under your skin then Mexico will give you an excellent charge to land one of these black finned devils.

Bahamas

A country consisting of more than 700 islands, cays, and islets and surrounded by the warm shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea, it is no wonder it has established itself as a bonefishing paradise. The joy of the Bahamas is that there are direct flights from the UK into Nassau, from here you can take a small island hopper to various island lodges. Aside from the endless flats fishing options, the Bahamas is also surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches stretching for miles. Lodges often offer spa facilities and a plethora of activities for non-fishers or days when you are not on the water. Whether you are looking for serious fishing trip, a getaway with you partner or a family break there is certainly a lodge for you in the Bahamas.

Cuba

With current political relations between the US and Cuba improving on a daily basis this may be the last opportunity to visit this unique Caribbean island before we see a huge influx of investment into the country and much of its charm lots to the modern era. Aside from the liveabaord operations on the South coast the other primary operations are all based out of 5 star resorts that again can offer great combination trips for fishers and non – fishers. Direct flights from the UK on Virgin can also remove much of the hassle. We can also extensive tailored itineraries to see the rest of the country with private transfers allowing you to see far more of the largest island in the Caribbean.

Belize

Wedged between Mexico and Guatemala, the tiny and eclectic country of Belize has become one of the most popular eco-tourism destinations in Central America. Lush tropical rain forests, pristine beaches, ancient Maya cities, diverse flora and fauna, and the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere are just a few of the many natural attractions that allure the adventure traveller to visit. It also offers some of the best combination fishing lodges anywhere in the world and some outstanding flats fishing for a huge variety of species. For anyone who loves diving as well as fishing the Turneffe Atoll has direct access to the Blue Hole which is one of the top worldwide dive sites. It is also very easy to combine a jungle experience and spectacular beaches to give you a full flavour of this English speaking country.
