In March this year, the trout fishing in Trentino, Italy has been more of a challenge than usual due to adverse weather conditions. Low temperatures and cold waters made the fish less active, whilst heavy rains affected the water levels. However, Val di Non, thanks to its two lakes has remained clear, still allowing fishing during the hottest hours of the day.

With the arrival of April, the weather has fortunately improved. The days are getting longer, and temperatures have reached peaks of 30 degrees this year (it’s not normal but weather conditions this year have been weird), this has allowed for decent dry fly fishing. The most common techniques in this period are nymph and streamer fishing. The marble trout, being a territorial fish, is more easily spotted outside of its lies during the months of April and May. It is advisable to fish during the middle of day when the weather is at its warmest to increase the chances of success.

In the Noce stream, between April and May, various insects abound, including the big mayfly (ephemera), olive dun, blue dun, march browns, as well as stoneflies and caddis.

Trout fishing in the spring requires patience, experience and knowledge of the area. It is important to adapt fishing techniques to the specific conditions of the moment. With strategy and a bit of luck, it is possible to achieve reasonable results even in the most difficult conditions.
