Iceland is enjoying a phenomenal salmon season, with many of the country’s rivers currently running as much as 40% ahead of their catch statistics from recent seasons. With September approaching, there is still a chance to get in on the action, but availability is now extremely limited. If you have been thinking about a late-season Icelandic salmon trip, this could be your last opportunity to fish during what is shaping up to be an exceptional year.
Stóra Laxá is also having a superb season, currently standing at 662 salmon as it heads into September – traditionally one of its most productive periods. The recent fishing has been exceptional, with 30 salmon landed by just six rods in a single day. Many of these fish were over 70cm (approximately 9lb), with the largest weighing an impressive 14lb. With the river entering its prime late-season period and conditions continuing to produce excellent numbers of fish, there is a genuine opportunity to experience some outstanding Icelandic salmon fishing. Miðfjarðará also has a couple of last-minute cancellations. The river is having a fantastic season and stands at 1,132 fish, 39% up on last year’s catch statistics. This beautiful, gin-clear river system provides varied fishing across its four beats and is renowned for its quality salmon, larger percentage multi sea wintered fish and superb pools. With the season continuing into late September, the coming weeks offer an excellent opportunity to target fresh and late-running salmon in classic Icelandic surroundings.
