Although primarily a bonefish destination the decrease in pressure has had a huge bonus in that large permit are being seen regularly on the flats along with good numbers of tarpon in and around the archipelago.
Having visited Los Roques nine times it has for a long time held a special place in my heart. It offers a relaxed atmosphere with exceptional and experienced guides. It is also a unique fishery as the bonefishing can be likened to dry fly fishing to sighted river trout; the presentation needs to be delicate to result in the ultimate reward. The flats here are a sight fisher’s playground with the possibility of experiencing different bonefish feeding environments in a day from tailing fish to nervous water and aggressive baitfish eating. I have always been particularly fond of the minnow fishing from the beaches which can be extremely exciting with aggressive takes in amongst the diving pelicans. In the past I have even played with floating minnows and caught them off the surface.
