By this time in January we are in the midst of the New Zealand trout season and whilst the guide teams are busily showing clients the wonderful locations and big trout we have sneaked a couple of fishing reports.

Fishing New Zealand, Owen River Lodge

Stonefly Lodge and Owen River Lodge in the north of the South Island have been enjoying a long spell of warm dry weather. Recently the Nelson Lakes region enjoyed a dump of fresh rain and whenever this happens undoubtedly the trout enjoy the extra food washed into the streams and the nice fresh water allowing the system to cool down.

No exception this season, after the rains the fishing has been excellent with some great days on the water. Regular angler to Stonefly Lodge, John H, experienced a wonderful day on the water landing 12 good trout. All of the fish were over 5 lbs and the largest topped out at 7.5 lbs.

Over this period Owen River Lodge welcome a couple of mixed fisher/non-fisher family weeks. The anglers were able to enjoy some wonderful fishing whilst the non-fishers enjoyed great nature walks and the joys of the New Zealand outback.
