December has seen unsettled conditions throughout New Zealand, but with such a vast amount of fishing options those willing to brave the elements have still enjoyed excellent fishing.

On the North Island, Tongariro Lodge guests have been enjoying great dry fly action with good hatches of mayfly and green beetle during the day. Both flies have the ability of pulling the fish up to the surface even in adverse conditions, including big brown and rainbow trout.

Long-time returning client Tony C. and lodge own Tony Hayes teamed up with head guide Tim McCarthy for a three day wilderness helicopter trip. Multi-day wilderness trips are available on both the north and south islands of New Zealand, and are great way to explore different rivers. On the trip they explored some beautiful rivers, finding a mix of rainbows and browns along with experiencing some of the wonderful New Zealand wildlife.

Owen River Lodge, on the South Island, has also been enjoying the good dry fly fishing with some of the notorious big brown trout of New Zealand coming out to feed. A regular visitor to ORL, Michael S, brought his two daughters to the lodge in December to experience NZ fishing for the first time. All three guests enjoyed some memorable days fishing and some big brown trout.
