Chase steelhead this winter in the Argentine summer…
Argentina is not a place that you would automatically think about when it comes to steelhead. However, nature found a way and there are now several rivers that do hold steelhead. Some hold just a few, sporadic steelhead – such as the Rio Grande on Tierra Del Fuego – whereas some hold a strong runs, such as the Santa Cruz River near Calafate.
A few years ago, test fishing picked up some positive results on the Santa Cruz, certainly enough to justify further investigation. After a couple of years enough information and confidence was gained to open the doors to visiting anglers and this has now been the case over the last few winters.
April is considered the prime month, along with late March. Early May can also be good, when the days get colder and shorter – the water clarity tends to increase at such times.
This is not a numbers game, so do not be tempted if you’re thinking of bonanza days. They can happen, of course, but realistically steelhead fishing is not a numbers game. Taking all experience levels and abilities into account, one fish per day per angler would be a fair expectation – some will catch more, some will catch less.
The lodge is a simple setup, but ample for an angler’s needs. Capacity is just four anglers at a time, with two twin rooms sharing a bathroom. What it lacks in grandeur it makes up for in location – it is a stone’s throw from the river.
