Each season on the chalkstreams sees various changes, often with new beats becoming available or new ownership bringing in new ideas for the benefit of anglers near and far. This winter will see a fairly large scale change along the River Anton valley that will bring with it both positive and negative news.
For those who have not yet heard, the Westover Estate beats (1 to 4) and Fullerton Estate beats (3 to 6) will move into a private long term lease. (Please note, THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE OUR BEAT AT WESTFAIR) Under its new guardianship the river will go through a large rewilding restoration that will further assist the wonderful wild trout and grayling populations that call the Anton their home. Sadly for many of us this will mean that these two stretches of water will no longer be available for day tickets and their usual syndicate rods.
Obviously, the work will do a lot of good for one of our favourite rivers, but it will be sad to see the availability of fishing days considerably reduced. The good news is there is still time to fish both venues before the trout season finishes or in November and December for grayling. It is also important to say that our beautiful Westfair Beat will continue to be available next season for those that love the River Anton.
