The River Kennet is one of our favourite chalkstreams, it flows as main river and a complex series of carriers. Between Hungerford and Kintbury the river offers some wonderful trout and grayling fly fishing with both dry flies and nymphs.

The fishing in this area has a range of wider open sections and wilder narrow sections providing a great variety of water. The river flows crystal clear for almost the whole season making it a wonderful sight-fishery where you can target specific fish. There is a good wild population of both brown trout and grayling with some supplement stocking.

The fishing is for groups of 1 – 4 rods, with access to a small lodge for breaks in the day. There is over 1.5 km of carriers and main river that can be explored. Each part of the river has its own character and numerous places for fish to find. It is also possible to arrange guiding, tackle hire and catering.

If you are looking for some late season trout fishing on the chalkstreams then there is still some great availability. The cost for River Kennet fly fishing in August and September is £140 per person.

The fishing is easily accessed with its relative proximity to London. It is under an hour’s drive from Junction 15 on the M25. And just over an hour on the train from central London.

August and September on the chalkstreams is one of our favourite times. As the weather begins to cool from the hotter summer months and the air gets a little damper the insect life springs into action. From mid-morning through to mid-afternoon small olives trickle off the surface, bringing the fish up. The evenings see the continuation of the summer sedge hatches and often one can see the aggressive splashy rises.
