If crystal clear rivers filled with trout and grayling appeals then Slovenia is a must visit destination. Nestled in the heart of Europe this small country offers some of the world’s finest trout and grayling fly fishing.

Our fishing focuses on the two main river systems in the north-western corner of Slovenia. Firstly the Sava River and its tributaries, including the Sava Bohinjka, Sava Dolinka and Radovna. The other system is the famous Soča River and its tributaries, including the Idrijča, Tolminka and Bača.

There are numerous ways to explore the great rivers of Slovenia whilst also being able to enjoy the rich history and stunning landscape that this small country has to offer. If you are looking for a starting point here are just three ways to enjoy Slovenia.

The Sava Experience (3 days / 4 nights)

Based from the beautiful lakeside spa town of Bled just 30 minutes from the capital Ljubljana you can target the Sava River and its tributaries. These swift mountain streams and rivers are home to feisty brown and rainbow trout as well as pale golden grayling.

From one of the many hotels in Bled (depending on preference) you can be on the river fishing within 15-30 minutes. The rivers typically offer good numbers of fish between ½ lb – 1 lb using dry fly and nymph fishing techniques. 20-30 fish days are not uncommon and the odd larger fish can be expected.

This is a great option for those looking for a quick getaway or a fishing/non-fishing combination trip to Slovenia.

Bled and its surrounding area has numerous non-fishing activities available from relaxing spa facilities through to historical tours and fantastic hiking routes.

The Soča Experience (3 days / 4 nights)

Based from the historically important town of Kobarid you are perfectly positioned to target much of the Soča River and its tributaries. On the other side of the Julian Alps to the Sava River, Soča system typically offers much bigger rivers home to brown and rainbow trout, Adriatic grayling and the elusive marble trout.

There are less accommodation options in Kobarid but from this base you can be on the river and fishing in 15 minutes – 1 hour. The rivers typically offer larger fish between 1 – 2 lbs using dry fly, nymph and streamer techniques. 5-10 fish days should be considered the norm but in amongst those you will have a chance of some bigger fish in excess of 4 lbs. If you are lucky you will also get shots at marble trout, a very shy species that shows itself only when hungry or in certain conditions. They are a real trophy and can exceed 20 lbs in weight.

Kobarid is more limited on non-fishing activities but does offer access to numerous historical sites and fantastic hiking routes as well as white water rafting and other outdoor activities.

The Slovenia Experience (6 days / 7 nights)

For a more rounded fishing experience of Slovenia then a full week tour spending 3 days fishing on both the Sava and Soča systems. Starting in Bled you will get an introduction to Slovenia on the cool swift Sava River and its tributaries.

Midway through the week you will take the car train through the Julian Alps, a real experience as you sit back and admire beautiful valleys and pass small villages clinging on to the mountain side. You will come out on the Soča side for the next 3 days fishing the larger Soča River and its tributaries.

This is a great option for a more focused fishing trip but can be tailored to suit non-fishers too.
