The Straumfjardara is a unique river located up on Snaefells peninsular on the west coast of Iceland and one of the very few that offers a full service lodge to just four rods. The river itself has approximately 27 named pools divided into four beats over 12 km of fishing up to the Rjúkundi waterfall. Straumfjardara exhibits all the classic features of a great Icelandic river from the canyon section at the top to the fascinating rocky pools and holes to more open sections below. The river is only available to intact groups making it one of the very few four rods lodges available in iceland to take as a private party. Included in the cost is two rod shares, but more can be added.

The main course is easily accessed by four wheel drive vehicle on the lower section, but the upper section is better access on foot. However there are no pools more than a five minute walk from the vehicle or the lodge down to the nearest pool. The river is best fished with single handed rods as there is never a real requirement for a very long cast. For some pools, some anglers can benefit from a short double handed rod or a switch rod but in general a longer rod is simply counterproductive.

The river is predominantly a grilse river with an average weight of 4 to 7 lbs but every year salmon up to 18 – 20 lbs are hooked, played and even sometimes landed. Straumfjarðara also has a good run of Arctic char and sea trout and some of them reach a good size.

The lodge is perfectly suited for a small group with five ensuite bedrooms so each fishermen has a single room with twin beds. The living room is elegant and cozy with a fireplace and the seperate dining room can easily fit groups up to ten. In a seperate building there is a scandinavian style sauna and hot tub where anglers can unwind and relax after a long day of fishing. There is a large veranda overlooking the river, ideal for relaxing with a drink and discussing the days fishing while keeping an eye on the river. the lodge is perfect for the more private groups that want to have the whole lodge to themselves as well as the whole river. Some 90 mins from Reykjavik on the west coast in breathtaking scenery.
