Are you looking to head to the Caribbean flats of Central America but finding it hard to decide between Mexico and Belize? They both offer fantastic flats fishing for bonefish, permit, tarpon and more as well as a range of lodge options for fishers and non-fishers alike, so why not do both?
For a long time the best route into Belize was via the United States, places such as Miami, Atlanta and so on, but for the last year or so it has been possible to fly in via Cancun. For some this removes the hassle of long waits at US customs and travelling through overcrowded airports. It also offers the opportunity to visit both countries in a single trip.
There are regular direct flights into Cancun on both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, and after a brief overnight it is then possible to fly down to Belize City on Tropic Air before traveling onto your lodge in the same day.
With many of our Mexican lodges operating just a short journey from Cancun it is possible to start your trip at one of them, many of which offer varying length stays. For serious anglers these lodges may include; Punta Allen Fishing Club, Pesca Maya or Isla Holbox Fishing Lodge. For those looking for non-fishing elements as well the lodges may include; Grand Slam Lodge, Playa Blanca or within Cancun itself.
Returning to Cancun you can then take the 1 hour 45 minute journey to Belize City to experience a whole different array of lodges, again many of which offer varying length stays. For serious anglers these lodges may include; Turneffe Flats Lodge or El Pescador Lodge. For those looking for non-fishing elements as well the lodges may include; Victoria House Resort and Spa, Belcampo Belize or Turneffe Island Resort.
Combining the two countries together can provide a wonderful experience that includes world class flats fishing, beautiful beaches, rich rainforests, magical Mayan ruins and more.
