Howenh Lodge Rio Grande
Sea trout fishing Rio Grande
On the far lower reaches of the legendary Rio Grande, Howenh Lodge commands a fabulous stretch of water home to sea trout straight from the South Atlantic. The lodge enjoys 28 kilometres of double-bank access on one of Argentina’s most technical and exacting fly rivers.
strong fish and plenty of space
With only four to six rods per week and 42 named pools fished in careful rotation, there is space here to fish properly. The statistics are impressive: one fish in five nudging past 15lb, trophies over 20lb a weekly occurrence, and a run estimated at up to 75,000 sea trout. Floating lines dominate, though single- and double-handed rods both have their place depending on mood and light. One might fish tails in the cool of morning, shift to heads as dusk gathers, and skate surface patterns through those long, windless evenings that stretch towards midnight. Wading is generally straightforward and the guides here are versed in every crease, seam and holding lie.
comfortable lodge
Anglers are accommodated in private riverside cabins and lodge rooms dressed in timber and stone, deep armchairs set by crackling fireplaces, and wide verandas made for recounting the day’s near-misses. Dining features generous Argentine breakfasts, streamside lunches taken with a view, and three-course suppers showcasing local beef, seasonal produce, and thoughtfully chosen wines.
