Weipa, West Cape York, Queensland

Varied and uncrowded saltwater fly fishing

Western Cape, on the northernmost tip of Australia, is a vast fishery with more than 100 miles of coastline and includes 11 rivers and river flats. Together, these combine to provide one of the most robust, varied and uncrowded saltwater fisheries in the world.

Truly remote fly fishing destination with endless variety

Based out of Weipa, anglers can fish a diversity of flats, river systems and creeks from dedicated fibreglass skiffs. Fishing in pairs, accompanied by an expert local guide, anglers can often encounter over 30 species over the course of a week long trip. The flats fishing is excellent, with the prized Indo-Pacific permit, one of the ‘big four’ permit species, endemic to the area along with blue bastards and black spotted tusk fish. The occasional large giant trevally also cruise these waters. Anglers can also chase tuna and mackerel close inshore, can sight fish on the river mouth flats for trevally, queenfish, barramundi, giant herring or take to the reefs for coral trout, red bass and mangrove jacks. Breakfast is served around 7am each day with guides collecting fishermen around 8am. Packed lunches and drinks are taken on the boat, with the fishing day ending around 4pm to 5pm. Fishing can be organised as a day trip or week long adventures tailored to suit anglers’ schedules and target species.

Comfortable lodge

The Cape Fly Fishing Lodge accommodates up to eight anglers (although fishing is capped at a maximum of six rods at a time) in a mix of twin or private en-suite rooms. There is internet access, a lounge, fly tying and casting area, a small fly shop and a range of tackle to rent or purchase. Locally sourced produce is prepared fresh each evening. There is also the opportunity to eat at nearby restaurants.
