Varied fishing with experienced guides
Xcalak, on the southern tip of Mexico’s Riviera Maya is a charming coastal village famous for untouched nature, crystal clear waters and warm hospitality. The area is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world boasting unparalleled marine biodiversity and ensuring plentiful fishing opportunities. Along with plentiful populations of permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook, the mangroves and reefs are home to large jacks, barracuda and snapper. A professional guide accompanies pairs of anglers as they head out to fish these waters. The fishing day starts around 6.30am with breakfast before setting out to explore the best spots. After a break at mid-day (typically taken on the boat but returning to the lodge is also possible), the afternoon session continues until around 4pm. Taking a shot at a coveted grand slam is easy here and can often be achieved within 20 minutes of the boat dock. Although a relatively new lodge, the operation is centred around an incredibly long-standing and experienced guide team.
Comfortable lodge in pretty surroundings
The lodge accommodates eight guests in comfortable rooms complete with air conditioning, TV and high speed internet. There is a swimming pool, open bar, dining area and café which is perfect for relaxing between fishing excursions. All meals and drinks are included, with many dishes based on local cuisine. For those who wish to take a break from fishing or to explore the surrounding area, there are nature tours to enjoy, and excursions to Mayan ruins along with superb diving and snorkelling. Xcalak is a down to earth Caribbean village with sandy streets and colourful houses. It’s not a conventional tourist destination but a place free from big developments and crowds – perfect for anglers and those looking to disconnect and enjoy nature in its purest form.
