Winter is a fabulous time to enjoy Tongariro Lodge which is tucked away between the southern shores of Lake Taupo and at the foot of New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park. The Lake Taupo fishery is the only in New Zealand to remain open to fly fisherman all year. The lower sections of the tributary rivers and streams provide access to Taupo’s large run of wild winter steelhead. With five of these tributaries within a 20 minute drive of Tongariro Lodge, it’s plain to see what a great winter fishing destination this is.

Lake Taupo is one of the most productive trout fisheries in the world. May to October is the prime time to target large adult rainbows, averaging four to eight pounds, running up Lake Taupo’s tributaries to spawn. The days are crisp and with temperatures averaging 12°C, it’s often possible to fish wearing light winter clothing despite it being mid-winter. The main method is upstream nymphing and great sport can be had targeting these bright silver, hard-fighting fish as they cartwheel, jump and run just like a steelhead.

Returning to the lodge with cosy fires burning and a delicious dinner awaiting is all part of the joy of a trip here at this time of year.
