We are delighted to see international guests salmon fly fishing in Norway from the beginning of the season this year. Snow levels were very good through the winter leading to the sort of spring conditions that we would expect for many rivers. Regular rains have generally kept water levels fluctuating allowing fish to move through the river systems and constant fresh fish entering the pools. Read more about specific rivers below.

Gaula River Norway, Winsnes Lodge Norway, Atlantic salmon Norway, Salmon Fly Fishing Norway

The Gaula

Current recorded catch for 2022: 6,348
Largest Fish: 19.3 kg (42.5 lbs)
Average size: 5.3 kg (11.68 lbs)

We are now into the last couple of days on the Gaula, as ever it has been an interesting season. Catches have not always reflected the good conditions at times but still a lot of impressive fish caught up and down the river. So far there have been 4 fish over 40 lbs and 78 of salmon over 30 lbs too. We hope that these big salmon continue to appear through the season.

Winsnes Lodge

Catch in 2022: 154
Largest Fish: 14.5 kg (31.97 lbs)
Average size: 5.80 kg (12.79 lbs)

Gaula River Norway, Winsnes Lodge Norway, Atlantic salmon Norway, Salmon Fly Fishing Norway

The fishing at Winsnes has slowed down due to a mixture of low water and fewer anglers for the last few days of the season. We hope that the last couple of days still has something special in store for the remaining anglers.

Norwegian Fly Fisher’s Club

Catch in 2022: 340
Largest Fish: 15 kg (33 lbs)
Average size: 5.9 kg (13 lbs)

Gaula River Norway, Norwegian Fly Fishers Club Norway, NFC Norway, Atlantic salmon Norway, Salmon Fly Fishing Norway

The fishing at NFC, like the whole river, has slowed down. Again, this is a mixture of fewer anglers and less favourable conditions. Still a number of good fish have been landed in the last few days, and we are hopeful that there are still a couple of big fish left for this season.

The Orkla

Largest Fish: 23.6 kg (52 lbs)
Average size: 5.1 kg (11.24 lbs)

Oldero Lodge Norway, Norway, Salmon fishing Norway, Norway fishing guide

The fishing on the Lakselv and at Oldero Lodge peaked in week 31 and has seen good numbers of fish landed in the proceeding weeks. There have been plenty of medium sized fish landed, with the largest fish still proving elusive. In addition to the salmon we are now beginning to see the sea trout entering the river in good numbers, a great sign for the dedicated sea trout weeks of September.

The river has still only landed one 40 lbs salmon this season to go with 27 salmon over 30 lbs for the season. With big fish running all weeks of the season we expect to see more salmon in excess of 30 and 40 lbs in 2022.
