Norway Salmon Fishing Report – 15th July 2025
We have entered the middle weeks of the much anticipated 2025 salmon season. The runs are really encouraging, water levels in the middle of Norway have dropped off after a run of hot and dry weather but remain good in the north of the country. Despite lower numbers of anglers the catches have been really good so far this season. There has been some huge salmon caught, and we can only hope of more to come especially with the northern fisheries moving into their prime.

The Gaula
Total catch in 2024: 456 (fishing closed on 22nd June 2024)
Current recorded catch for 2025: 1,656
Largest Fish: 19kg (41.89lb)
Average size: 5.3kg (11.68lb)

A lengthy spell of hot dry weather has seen water temperatures rise, as a precautionary measure the Gaula river board have introduced some additional fishing regulations: reduced fishing hours (0500 to 1300), light fishing (floating line only and lightly weighted flies), no lifting fish out of water if releasing. Hopefully some cooler, wetter weather will come through soon and the regulations will be lifted. The standouts are; this year we have seen the strongest run of small salmon in 14 years and solid numbers of medium and large fish, and that the catch and release rate is currently 88%, a great sign for the future of the big Gaula salmon.
So far this season there has been three salmon over 40lb and 21 fish over 30lb. We hope that these big salmon continue to appear through the season.

Total Catch in 2025: 122
Largest Fish: 13.5kg (29.76lb)
Average size: 5.61kg (12.37lb)

Despite the water levels dropping and warming, fresh fish are still entering the NFC beats most days with a number of salmon being caught with sea lice on. In the lower ater, we have found the sea trout fishing has also been great with some notable fish caught in the last week including one of around 9lb.
Last minute availability:
20 – 27 July (week 30): 5 rods (good fishing throughout all beats)
27 July – 3 August (week 31): 8 rods (exciting late season week)

The Orkla

Current recorded catch for 2025: 1,062
Largest Fish: 18.5kg (40.79lb)
Average size: 5.2kg (11.64lb)

The Orkla tends to experience very similar conditions to the Gaula, the water levels are dropping and warming but no additional regulation have been imposed at this point. Again, the salmon runs are very encouraging and some wonderful fish are showing up throughout the river. So far this season there has been three salmon over 40lb and 19 salmon over 30lb too. We hope that these big salmon continue to appear through the season.
Grindal Lodge
Total Catch in 2024: 6 (fishing closed on 22nd June 2024)
Total catch in 2025: 37
Largest Fish: 15.0kg (33.07lb)
Average size: 6.9kg (15.21lb)

In the last week, some of the bigger fish have begun to stir in the Grindal beats with several notable fish between 10 and 15kg landed despite the warm sunny conditions. With the increase in activity we are excited for the days ahead.

The Lakselv

Conditions on the Lakselv and accross the Oldero Lodge beats are looking fantastic. Water levels are good and fresh salmon are moving in on every high tide. This past week, the lodge landed a stunning hen salmon of 11.8kg and 11.6kg.
So far this season on the whole of the Lakselv there has been 10 salmon over 30lb, two of which were landed by Oldero guests. We hope that these big salmon continue to appear through the season.

Total catch in 2024: 1,998 (season was closed for 2+ weeks)
Current recorded catch for 2025: 2,289
Largest Fish: 18kg (39.68lb)
Average size: 4.6kg (10.14lb)

The Namsen lies just north of Trondheim and has a rich history for big salmon. It is a much bigger river than the likes of the Gaula and Orkla so whilst fly fishing is not always the primary method there are some lovely beats suited for fly fishing. The 2025 season has had a good start already landing more salmon than the whole of 2024.
So far this season there has been 31 salmon over 30lb, two of these fish was taken on fly. We hope that these big salmon continue to appear through the season.
Namsentunet Lodge
Total Catch in 2024: 78
Total Catch in 2025: 105
Largest Fish: 12.6kg (27.78lb)
Average size: 4.37kg (9.63lb)

The Namsen River has had a very good season, with a lot of fish in the river and good catches despite much less fishing pressure on the river compared to previous years. There has been a relatively high water level throughout, but there have been days with a falling river and exceptionally good fly fishing conditions.

Current recorded catch for 2025: 1,273

Average size: 5.9kg (13.01lb)

The first month saw fish mainly caught in the lower river, as to be expected but it was exciting to see a number of fish caught above the Gaulfoss including a fish over 40lb. Water conditions are good and the fish continue to enter the river and we hope will start to pass the Gaulfoss with more pace over the next few weeks. The standout is that the catch and release rate is currently 89.4%, a great sign for the future of the big Gaula salmon.
So far this season there has been three salmon over 40lb and 21 fish over 30lb. We hope that these big salmon continue to appear through the season.

The Orkla tends to experience very similar conditions to the Gaula, with regular floods pushing through the fishing has generally been slow. When the water clears though, the fishing tends to take off and clusters of stunning fresh salmon are caught. So far this season there has been three salmon over 40lb and 11 salmon over 30lb too.
