Rio Marié Fishing Report – Week 4, August 31 to September 7
This week brought a remarkable combination of experiences, as part of the group travelled to the Turi River—the Marié’s largest tributary—for the first headwaters camp adventure of the season. There, anglers were rewarded with untouched lagoons, wild landscapes, and encounters with giants.
Meanwhile, those fishing from the mothership found equally memorable action. Dropping water levels made fish more accessible, setting the incredible stage for 11 trophies over 20lb and several peacocks beyond 80cm.
The results spoke for themselves: a week full of powerful fish, dramatic battles, and stories that perfectly capture the River of Giants.
Hannes began his week with solid catches, but the river had saved something special for the end. On the very last day, guided by Sérgio, he spotted a faint ripple in the middle of a lagoon. One precise cast, one brutal strike — and suddenly his fly was gone in an explosion of water. Moments later, a 20lb peacock bass was in the net, the perfect closing chapter to his journey.
Gary’s week became a true saga of the Marié. While fishing a sandbar with his guide Agu, he intercepted a moving wake and brought a powerful 21lb peacock bass to hand. The following day, persistence turned into glory: with guide Rafael, he connected with the fish of a lifetime — a 90cm, 23lb giant that stripped line into the backing before finally surrendering. And the river was not finished with him. Later that same afternoon, Gary landed yet another 21lb trophy, sealing a run that few anglers will ever experience.
Matt had already landed a 20lb fish that morning, but destiny had more in store. In an unnamed lagoon on the Turi River, his guide challenged him: land a giant here, and the place would forever carry his name. At first, the water seemed quiet — until a sudden strike sent a massive fish charging into timber. A native guide dove into the water, wrestling alongside Matt for more than 30 minutes until they finally brought the fish clear. The reward: a 21lb peacock bass and the honour of naming a new lagoon of the Marié.
Alex had already secured a strong 20lb fish, but what followed was nothing short of epic. At the mouth of a lagoon, his fly was devoured by a monster that tore downstream with unstoppable force. Instinctively, Alex and his guide leapt from the boat onto a sandbar, bracing against the charge. The fish ripped through the fly line and into the backing, nearly breaking free. At that critical moment, another boat approached, and a native guide dove into the current, swimming more than 100 feet to seize the line by hand. Against all odds, they subdued a 21lb peacock bass — a capture as dramatic as the Marié itself.

Rio Marié Fishing Report – Week 2, August 17 to 24
This week’s group arrived eager to embrace everything the Marié offers. Their energy and enthusiasm set the tone both on the water and aboard the Untamed mothership, creating a week filled with camaraderie, laughter, and memorable encounters.
The fishing matched the spirit of the group. With water levels steady and dropping, anglers connected with powerful peacock bass across lagoons and structures, testing skill and persistence against some of the river’s largest residents. Giants over 20lb made their presence known, proving once again why the Marié is called the River of Giants.
It was a week that blended technical challenge with pure enjoyment—a reminder that at the Marié, success is measured not only in numbers, but also in the stories shared and friendships forged along the way.
Among highlights this week was Brad, when what began as a slow day turned into a story for the ages. After a fly change, Brad hooked into a true monster—a 90cm, 24lb peacock bass so powerful it broke the first landing net. With the backup net, they finally secured the fish, sealing an unforgettable triumph.
Then on the final day, David was still searching for his trophy. Persistence paid off after countless casts, and he finally connected with an 88cm, 22lb giant. The fight was tense, the reward immense—a perfect finale to his week on the Marié.

Rio Marié Fishing Report – Week 1, August 10 to 17
We opened our 11th season with the energy this river demands. Rio Marié remains the ultimate, limited-access destination for giant peacock bass—a place designed for anglers who value refined tactics, disciplined casting, and the pursuit of exceptional fish. It is not for everyone. It is for those seeking the pinnacle of jungle fly fishing, where a single strike can define your week.
This week confirmed once again why the Marié holds the world’s largest specimens, and why its reputation is built on precision, persistence, and rarity.
This week also marked a special milestone: Carlos and Joaquim, once native guides, stepped up as the main professional fly-fishing guides of the Rio Marié. They are the very first indigenous guides to become full pro fly-fishing guides in the Amazon.
Fully trained through Untamed’s programme, they distinguished themselves with commitment, skill, and enthusiasm — even dedicating themselves to learning English to better connect with international anglers. Their achievement is a proud chapter in the story of the Marié, showing how deep local knowledge, combined with training and passion, elevates the entire experience.
Juliano’s mission was to land the biggest peacock bass of his life. In a quiet lagoon, his guide Rafael called out a cruiser. One precise cast with the Marié SLT, one decisive eat, and the fight was on. Juliano held firm and brought a 90cm giant to hand—textbook jungle execution.
With years of experience on these waters, Mike’s measured approach was rewarded with an 88cm, 22 lb trophy. A reminder that calm precision is the edge on the Marié.
Mike’s highlight came when casting to what seemed like a log. A heavy strip, and the log came alive. The flight ended with a 20lb temensis, a classic Marié deception and drama.
Using a fly tied by his grandfather, John, Matthew landed the biggest peacock bass of his young life. A generational moment, written on the waters of the Marié.
With water levels steady and bait becoming more concentrated in the lagoons, the weeks ahead promise consistent trophy opportunities. The Marié is set to deliver what only it can: precise casts, bigger fish, and the kind of encounters that define a lifetime of angling.
