Where to go saltwater fishing

The Seychelles, Bahamas, Belize, Cuba, Mexico and Christmas Island are among our top picks, with an incredibly wide range of lodges and operators to choose from.

Here’s just a snapshot of what we can suggest:

The Seychelles
Considered by many anglers to offer the finest saltwater flats fly fishing in the world, the shallow waters around the outer island Seychelles atolls offer unbelievable wading and fantastic fly fishing opportunities for an incredible number of different species. You will find bonefish in extraordinary numbers, giant trevally along with several other trevally species, milkfish, triggerfish, bumphead parrotfish, permit, and dozens of other reef and flats species. Alphonse, Cosmoledo, Farqhuar, Astove and Providence – wonderfully secluded and blessed with incredible scenery – are unlike any other fishing destinations found on the planet. Charlotte Chilcott, multi-time visitor (25 times and counting) sums up the key features of each in her Seychelles, Five Extraordinary Atolls blog.

Belize
Belize has always been a fascinating country to visit and is perfect as a first saltwater destination. Big migratory tarpon arrive at certain times of year, the coastal flats have a great permit populations and anglers will find also bonefish, resident tarpon, and snook to test their fishing skills. The flats are productive and varied as a result of the longstanding conservation practices in place. You can wade or skiff fish and there’s plenty for non-fishers to do as well. Our blog on Belize, The Six Best Places to Fish covers some of our favourite options here.

Christmas Island
Famous as one of the original saltwater destinations and the proving ground for many modern saltwater techniques and flies, Christmas Island ought to be on every adventurous saltwater angler’s list. The atoll is huge, some 80 miles in length and the lagoon is 12 miles across. The sand flats in the lagoon hold massive populations of bonefish and some of the largest triggerfish in the world. Giant trevally maraud the surfline and there is a prolific offshore fishery with tuna and multitude of species. The Christmas Islanders are wonderfully friendly it’s a great place to become immersed in a simple existence, leaving the stresses of the modern world behind.
