Alphonse fishing report 28th December – 4th January 2020

St Francois Atoll was on top form over the past week. An event occurred that only happens once every few years. Massive schools of rabbitfish formed into bait balls which once in the lagoon caused the GTs to go wild. The GT fishing was fantastic throughout the week, this coupled with amazing bonefishing a few permit and triggerfish made for a hugely memorable week. Not only was the flats fishing amazing but also the bluewater angling, with anglers landing some catches of a life time.

The bonefishing was as excellent as always with 322 bonefish landed. The bait balls of rabbitfish moved into the lagoon on Saturday causing chaos on the flats.

Day one started with Thomas Hardecky and Mark Speelman landing three GT’s between them. Murray Collins and Ian Hodge also landed three GT’s a piece, David Hall and Christan each landed two GT’s and Oleksander Sorokin landed one GT. Marcus Kurschat must be one of the luckiest people on the planet arrived on Alphonse, having never cast a fly line in saltwater he ended landing more fish than most anglers combined. Marcus landed five GT’s, a massive permit and a triggerfish. The largest of the GTs Marcus caught measured a massive 114 cm.

Over the week many GT’s were landed. The bluewater fishing turned out to be amazing for John Miller who managed to make Alphonse bluewater history landing a golden bluewater slam on conventional tackle. John landed a 300 lb black marlin, sailfish, wahoo and  a tuna. The last day was the day for Gavin Laidlaw who landed a massive yellowfin tuna on fly. All in all this was a exceptional week of fishing and one we wont forget in a hurry.
