Winter still has a firm hold on the countryside. Mornings are slow to brighten, frost lingers on the banks, and the rivers themselves feel calm and deliberate, flowing clear and cold through the valleys. For now, it’s a season for patience, but for chalkstream anglers, it’s also a time of anticipation.
While trout fishing remains some time away, spring is already very much on the minds of those who know these rivers well. Subtle changes begin long before opening day: lengthening daylight, the first signs of life in the margins, and that familiar sense that the chalkstreams are quietly preparing for the season ahead.

One of the great pleasures of chalkstream fishing is how clearly the seasons define it. Spring marks a true turning point. After winter flows subside and weed growth begins to recover, trout start to feed more confidently, responding to early hatches and longer, brighter days. April and early May can offer some wonderfully technical fishing — delicate presentations, selective trout, and the chance to enjoy these rivers before the intensity of the main Mayfly period arrives.

For many anglers, this is when the chalkstreams are at their most rewarding. The rivers feel spacious, the banks peaceful, and each rise carries an added sense of significance after the long closed season. Whether it’s the first dry fly of the year, a perfectly judged upstream cast, or simply being back beside a favourite beat, spring outings tend to linger long in the memory.
With this in mind, now is an ideal time to start planning, as our booking calendars are opening up. Availability for spring and Mayfly chalkstream trout fishing is always limited, particularly on the most sought-after rivers and beats, and many prime dates are reserved well before the season begins. Booking early not only secures the best choice of water but also allows us to match anglers with the most suitable rivers, guides, and timings for their objectives.
If you’re thinking ahead to the coming trout season, whether for a single day, a guided experience, or a longer chalkstream itinerary, now is the perfect time to get in touch. We’re happy to discuss options, advise on likely spring conditions and hatches, and help put together a memorable start to the season. As winter slowly loosens its grip, having a day on a chalkstream in the diary gives you something very special to look forward to.
We’d also like to extend an invitation to join our syndicate on the River Wylye at Langford Lakes. This beat is exclusive to Aardvark McLeod, and encapsulates the delights of the wild Wiltshire chalkstream. Wild brown trout and grayling abound, and thanks to great water quality and habit management the fly life can support a range of fish sizes including some large and wary specimens. There are very limited numbers available to keep pressure minimal on the water, so it will be sold on a first come basis!
Wylye Syndicate – £380 for one rod including VAT.
